INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS AND A GLIMPSE INTO 2024
As we embark upon the upcoming Fall season, I'm excited to share the latest trends and insights that are shaping the world of interior design. 2023 has been a year of “Maximalism”, embracing bold colors, patterns, and textures to the home, and as an interior designer who specializes and appreciates all things luxury designs for remodels and renovations, I’ve witnessed some remarkable shifts in the world of luxury interiors, and I can already tell that the upcoming new year is shaping up to be an exciting and colorful one. Rather than sharing these with you in my yearly design trend report which I share in the new year, I wanted to revisit these trends with you that has shaped our current year to appreciating the “Old World Elegance” and give you a sneak peek into what we can expect in 2024.
1. TIMELESS ELEGANCE ENDURES
In 2023, we've seen a resurgence of timeless elegance in luxury interiors. Classic design elements, such as fine woodwork, handcrafted details, and opulent materials, have made a powerful comeback and continues to be the big craze. The revival of classic design elements like these are known to stand the test of time and one of my key design foundations when I’m working on a project. I love incorporating beautifully crafted crown molding, traditional wainscoting, and rich wood finishes. For a client who leans towards a more contemporary aesthetic, I might introduce sleek, minimalist furnishings and a neutral color palette while preserving classic architectural details. These elements not only exude luxury but also ensure the space retains its appeal for years to come.
2024 SNEAK PEEK:
Expect to see an even stronger emphasis on timeless design in the upcoming year. The fusion of classic and contemporary elements will take center stage, creating interiors that are both luxurious and relevant for years to come. Imagine a modern kitchen with sleek lines and cutting-edge integrated appliances, but with the warmth of timeless materials like marble and brass accents, creating a truly enduring and luxurious space.
2. SUSTAINABLE LUXURY
Sustainability continues to be a major driving force in luxury interior design. Clients are increasingly seeking eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient solutions, and sustainable design practices. Luxury no longer solely means excess; it also means responsible and mindful design. One of the ways I like to incorporate this is with the use of vintage pieces in the décor along with the use of reclaimed wood as floating shelves as I did on my La Salle kitchen renovation project. Lastly, just recently in a space planning project that I’m currently working on here in Raleigh, I’m re-purposing a beautiful small dining table into an executive desk for the home office. This not only reduces environmental impact but also adds a unique character and story to the space.
2024 SNEAK PEEK:
In 2024, sustainability will be woven even deeper into the fabric of luxury interiors. Look out for innovative eco-conscious materials like recycled glass countertops, plant based leathers and organic textiles, infused finishes like the mother-of-pearl platinum faucet, and energy-efficient lighting solutions resulting in designs that leave a smaller carbon footprint while delivering uncompromising luxury. Ensuring luxury homes in 2024 are not only opulent but also environmentally responsible.
3. THE RISE OF SMART LUXURY
Smart home technology continues to be an integral part of luxury living. In 2023, we've seen an increased demand for integrated smart systems that enhance convenience, security, and comfort. From voice-activated controls to intuitive lighting and climate management, these features are redefining what luxury means in the digital age. I’ve always embraced technology and I’m a believer that incorporating smart technology into a home, it will transform the way we live and experience luxury at home. When my husband and I first purchased our current home a few years back one of the first things we did was to integrate a smart thermostat along with keyless entry door system. In our summerview project electrical was one of our biggest challenges since the home was more than 20 years old, however we were able to integrate a lighting system that not only would allow the clients to control it remotely, but they can program certain settings allowing them to regulate the amount of electrical usage they would need for their home. From remote activated lighting to a climate control system that anticipates preferences, it's the epitome of luxury and convenience.
2024 SNEAK PEEK:
Brace yourselves for a smarter, more connected 2024. As we enter the new world of advancements in artificial intelligence and the internet of all things (IoT), we can anticipate even more seamless and personalized smart luxury experiences in the year ahead. Imagine a home that not only responds to your voice commands but also anticipates your needs, adjusting lighting, temperature, and even art displays based on your preferences. I don’t know about you, but I always wanted to live in the times of the “Jetson’s” and I’m excited that we’re getting a little closer to that becoming a reality.

4. PERSONALIZATION BEYOND MEASURE
Personalization has become paramount these days and when it comes to luxury the value of designs that speak to your unique lifestyle, and desire is now priceless. From custom-made furnishings to bespoke color palettes, interior designers like me are collaborating closely with clients to create spaces that truly enhances their living becoming more personalized. In a recent project, I’ve collaborated extensively with a client to design their home to feel more like their “sanctuary within”. What initially began as a color consult has now become a space planning interior design service. The client has been working on a kitchen and home renovation and hired me as her interior designer to help finalize the interiors from wallpaper coverings, custom paint color schemes, window coverings from handmade textiles, designer lighting and sourcing unique handcrafted furniture pieces that will complete the look and feel of each space. It’s still an on-going project since they opted to add more areas of their home, but the result in the end will be that they will have a home that truly reflects the family’s personality and lifestyle.
2024 SNEAK PEEK:
The desire for personalization will intensify in the coming year. Expect to see an emphasis on exclusive, limited-edition pieces and designs that reflect the client's individuality in every detail. Think of a home where every element, from the lighting color to the aroma, adjusts based on your mood and activities, creating a deeply personalized, immersive experience.
5. A RETURN TO NATURE
2023 has witnessed a strong connection between luxury and nature. Biophilic design principles, incorporating natural elements like greenery and organic materials, have flourished. This trend not only adds a touch of serenity but also aligns with the pursuit of wellness and harmony. In my own home as well as my clients I always like to integrate live greenery and when I’m working on a project, I like to bring on-board a local horticulturist who can recommend the right plants and trees for each space. When you incorporate elements from the outdoor including materials like natural stone accents which has also grown in popularity, and large picturesque windows it will help to connect interiors with the outdoors. This approach not only enhances aesthetics but also promotes well-being.
2024 SNEAK PEEK:
Nature-inspired design will continue to flourish in 2024. Homes will feature retractable glass walls and interior courtyards, allowing residents to bask in the beauty of nature while enjoying the comforts of luxury living. Look forward to designs that blur the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating luxurious retreats immersed in the beauty of the natural world.
As we navigate the ever-evolving world of luxury interior design, I'm committed to staying at the forefront of these trends, ensuring your home reflects the pinnacle of elegance, sustainability, personalization, and smart living.
